Music is like a story, a journey, a path. It begins, goes somewhere in
development, be it in song or in musical variation etc. Music is also manipulation of sound. It is used to help in our lives- to express emotion, as an aid to manual work, or latterly, as part of a broader canvas of mediums, which we find in the digital world, ranging from computer games to screen, to the very modern stage itself. This is a new world for music. Those that travel it must have courage as they explore its many paths. Some paths will wander to nowhere. But amongst those paths is the one path to the future. Only those in the future can tell which
path was the right one. They can look back and see.
All journeys have a direction. Our journey through life is fruitful when we have a strong anchor in the past and a point in the future to which we aim. We can then dance, in the present, on this definite path, in much the same way as a piece of cloth can dance on a clothes-line which is firmly anchored at each end. If one end falls, the cloth will no longer dance in the breeze.
Bernard and Brendan are well anchored with a realization of the importance of past tradition and it’s sounds of music and language. They have the courage to explore as they strive for the musical future. Only time and those in the future will know if they are on the right path. But I can say that I enjoyed wandering their current path, catching glimpses of stuff that resonates with my own life’s path but which I had forgotten or blithely ignored. It is worth listening to this cd.
